How Kutty Phonics helps

A short guide for parents: what phonics is, why it suits Malayali children, and how to help at home.

What is phonics?

Phonics teaches children the sounds that letters make, and how to blend those sounds into words. A child who knows that c says /k/, a says /a/ and t says /t/ can read cat without having seen it before. Most schools now teach reading this way.

Why do Malayali children find English spelling hard?

Malayalam is written the way it sounds: each letter keeps its sound. English is different. Its 26 letters make about 44 sounds, and one sound can be spelt in several ways (ee in tree, ea in sea). Children who learn letter names (ay, bee, see) but not letter sounds often guess at words. Phonics teaches the sounds directly, in a planned order.

What is the Malayalam sound bridge?

Every English sound in Kutty Phonics is linked to the Malayalam sound closest to it: s is like സ്, sh is like ഷ്, ee is like ഈ. A child starts from a sound they already know and hears the small difference that makes it English. Where Malayalam has no exact match, the teacher says so and shows what to do with the mouth.

Which English sounds do Kerala children mix up?

Some English sounds have no twin in Malayalam, or are said differently in Kerala English. Kutty Phonics practises these on purpose:

  • i and ee: sit is not seat, ship is not sheep. Keep i short.
  • f and p: f is not a p with a puff. The top teeth rest on the lower lip.
  • v and w: for v the teeth touch the lip; for w only the lips round.
  • z and s: zoo is not സൂ. Feel the buzz in the throat.
  • th: three is not ത്രീ. The tongue goes between the teeth.
  • short o: keep o short and round in dog and hot, not ഓ.

Fish Sort, one of the eleven games, sorts word pairs like these into two nets until the difference is easy.

In what order are the sounds taught?

The 48 sounds come six at a time across 8 Kerala worlds. The first six are s, a, t, p, i and n, because together they make many short words a child can read at once: sat, pin, tap. Then come more letters, then sounds made of two letters (sh, ch, th, ee), and finally magic e (cake, kite, rose). See all 48 sounds.

What age is Kutty Phonics for?

It is made for children aged 3 to 8. Three and four year olds enjoy it best with a grown-up beside them. Older children who still struggle with spelling can start from world 1 and move quickly.

How long should my child play each day?

One or two levels a day, about ten minutes, is plenty. Short daily practice beats a long session once a week. Today's challenge and the day count on the home screen help build the habit.

How can I help at home?

  • Say letter sounds, not letter names: /s/, not "es".
  • Sit with your child for the first lessons and say the sounds together.
  • Use the Malayalam bridge out loud: "sh, like ഷ്".
  • Point out letters on signs, packets and books.
  • Praise effort more than speed.

You don't need perfect English yourself. Naina Teacher explains everything in Malayalam, so you can learn alongside your child.
